Earth States®
Where colour, space & self align®
The homes that feel instinctively right don't begin with a design style.
They begin with understanding.
Every one of us has an innate relationship with the qualities of the places we inhabit. We don't all respond to them in the same way — and that isn't simply a matter of taste.
Within Earth States®, these qualities are understood through colour and space — with space encompassing the wider elements of design, including light, materials, texture, pattern, form, scale, proportion, finish and spatial character.
Earth States® begins by understanding how you naturally respond to these qualities.
From this understanding, each design decision has a clearer place to begin.
Colour, space and self brought into congruence.
Your home is more than a collection of beautiful rooms
The places we inhabit can influence how we feel, think and behave — often subconsciously.
We can admire an interior without wanting to live in it. We can be drawn to what a particular style represents without necessarily responding to its qualities in the same way when we experience them ourselves.
Admiration and affinity aren't always the same thing.
Yet when we're creating our own homes, it is easy to look outside ourselves for answers — to magazines, Pinterest, Instagram, trends or the opinions of others.
We may find ourselves oscillating between different styles or making choices based on what we think we should like, without understanding the qualities to which we naturally respond.
Earth States® offers a different place to begin.
It is a design philosophy expressed through a methodology for understanding our individual relationship with colour and space. Informed by colour and design psychology, biophilic principles, observation and practical design experience, it provides a framework for identifying how you naturally respond to the qualities of place before the design decisions are made.
From understanding comes greater clarity.
Not a prescribed style.
A foundation from which your own home can take shape.
Beyond colour. Beyond style.
Earth States® is built on a simple principle:
We don't all experience places in the same way.
There is no universally perfect colour palette.
Or perfect design style.
Or perfect home.
Only the qualities that feel right to the people who inhabit the place.
Colour provides perhaps the most immediate example.
What one person experiences as soft and restful, another may find flat or draining. What feels rich and enveloping to one person may feel overwhelming to someone else.
Even colours commonly described as neutral are still experienced.
Even white can be loud.
The same principle applies to the wider elements of a space.
Because the question isn't simply whether something is beautiful.
It's whether its qualities are right for you.
Discover your Earth State
Rather than beginning by asking what design style you like, Earth States® seeks to understand something more fundamental:
Which qualities of colour and space feel instinctively right to you?
At the beginning, you may not consciously know the answer.
That's what the process is designed to help identify.
Drawing on colour and design psychology, and through thoughtful conversation, careful observation and skilled elicitation, I build a deeper understanding of you — how you naturally respond to the world around you, and the broader patterns that emerge in your responses to colour and the other elements of a space.
This helps distinguish between what you admire, what you may have come to believe you should like, and the qualities with which you have a natural affinity.
Gradually, a clearer picture begins to emerge.
Once identified, you begin to recognise how these patterns translate into colour and the wider elements of design — an understanding that can inform not only the design taking shape, but the choices you make within your home over time.
Not a prescribed style or design category, but a deeper understanding of your innate colour preferences and the spatial and sensory qualities that feel instinctively right to you.
From understanding to design
Once your Earth States® have been identified, they begin to inform the design.
Your innate colour preferences provide a foundation for developing a palette, further refined through the Colour Sweet Spot Method™.
From there, your Earth States® inform the wider design — from materials, texture and pattern to form, proportion, finish and spatial qualities.
Nothing is chosen in isolation.
Each decision is considered in relation to the place, the other elements within it and, importantly, the people who will inhabit it.
A recognisable style is often the outcome.
It isn't the starting point.
The result is a clearer framework for making decisions — one grounded in understanding rather than assumption.
Design that supports the way we live
A beautifully designed room can be coherent without being congruent with the person who lives there.
That distinction sits at the heart of Earth States®.
The elements of a space can work beautifully together and still not feel right to you.
Because a home isn't simply observed.
It is experienced.
Earth States® brings the person into the equation — considering not only how the elements of a design relate to one another, but how their qualities relate to the people who inhabit the place.
Colour, space and self brought into congruence.
Creating places that feel natural.
Effortless to live in.
Instinctively right.
When a home feels instinctively right for the people who live there, the difference isn't simply in how it looks, but in how it feels to live in.
