Rather than beginning by asking what design style you like, or what colours you prefer, Earth States® seeks to understand something more fundamental:

At first, you may not consciously know what that pattern is. You may simply find yourself consistently drawn towards certain colours or places and less comfortable with others, without necessarily understanding why.

That's where the process begins.

Drawing on colour and design psychology, alongside thoughtful conversation, careful observation and skilled elicitation, I begin to identify patterns in how you naturally respond to colour and the wider qualities of a space.

And those patterns can be revealing.

They help us distinguish between affinity, admiration, association and aspiration.

We can admire something without its qualities necessarily being right for us. We can be drawn towards a particular aesthetic because of what it represents or suggests about the way we would like to live. And our responses can be shaped by memories, experiences and associations that are entirely our own.

Across those different responses, a pattern may begin to emerge — an affinity with particular qualities of colour and space that consistently feel right to us.

Gradually, those responses become easier to recognise and understand — giving them a clearer rationale and a more useful place within the design process.
